Starting to get my swimming mojo back

It has been a long road, Shingles absolutely wiped me out and it has only been in the last week that I feel the drive to swim long coming back. Until last week every swim over 3km was a chore and felt terrible, and then last week last week I managed, a Monday 4km swim (with 4×100 IM at the end – out of practice on these!!):

a Wednesday 10k swim:

a Friday 3km swim:

…and a Saturday morning 3km swim:

All in all a good week – the shoulders really felt it on Sunday and the 4km in the pool this morning was really tough for the first 1km…times are better than at this time last year – 1:33-1:40/100m, as opposed to 1:40/100m average, which surprises me as I still don’t feel it….I still feel in recovery mode…

This week’s aim is to beat the swims I had last week….so 4km today, 10k Wed, Fri/Sat OW but with a 3-4km swim somewhere on Tue or Thur…next week is Chicago week, so swimming will be limited albeit in the rather beautiful pool in the Intercon in Chicago…

As to races, these are still planned to be:

Thames Marathon/Bridge to Bridge – 14km

Windermere One Way – 17.5km

Serpentine Super Six – 9.6km

The Thames Marathon will be my 4th time doing it, and Windermere the 2nd. The Serpentine swim is a new one though, and I am doing it for charity, a little more information has come out on this since I last posted:

Super Six: Swim six miles with a combination of one-mile and two-mile events during the day. All the ‘Super Sixers’ will start in the same one-mile wave, then how you complete the total distance is up to you. Choose to swim event after event, or take a break before you continue on with your swim

Sounds like fun – looking at it I think I will swim 4 mile swims and then do a 2 mile at the end… I think….regardless I am raising money for a small charity that helps disabled and disadvantaged children in the UK to participate and progress in sport. This is done via mainly small grants to help buy much needed equipment. If you can help at all please head over to my donations page, THANKS!!

So bored……

So bored……

When will this virus give up – now at the end f week two of having it and I have really had enough….the rash has all but gone, the bone aching fatigue and neuropathic pain has not however….I have never had anything quite like this….just shattered….currently I am due to start work again on Monday, how I am going to manage the mass of emails and the ton of time critical things people will throw at me I have no idea…currently I can manage to decide what to eat….

So frustrating….

So another blog post so quickly on the heels of my 70.3 race report – what has happended!

Well I am ill….first proper bug in ages and a nasty one too…bacterial laryngitis…fever, headaches, unbelievably sore throat,  no voice and gunky green stuff…euch! So it has been lots of paracetamol, ibuprofen, strepsils and klaricid…..fun…

I managed to do a couple of recovery sessions before I was wiped out by the lurgy last week and things felt surprisingly good post Wimbleball, in fact less painfull than post Marshman…really suprising.

I had a long discussion with Mike the coach last week and we decided that the order of the day (possibly month) was no running until the ankle heals assessed through no pain on pushing off the wall during swimming (which is essentially decelerated bouncing/jumping) but focus on swim/bike. We have also discussed the race season for next year and there will be no IM in 2012 – I will be a father again (no.3) and that combined with work/life doesn’t leave time for the long sessions for full IM.

As for Henley Challenge swim …that is up in the air…I really want to do it (I love open water swim races) but if this bug has not cleared it will be off 🙁 I might just have to find another single OW race to do later in Jul/Aug…

Anyway just a short post today…have to sort things out for a busy work day today and tomorrow before heading to Austria

a busy week….

a busy week….

Okay so the last week has been hard. Work has taken me out every day somewhere else in the country:

Monday – Royal Tunbridge Wells
Tuesday – Maidenhead/Exeter
Wednesday – Exeter/Truro
Thursday – Truro/Exeter
Friday – Home 🙂

This has meant squeezing in training….

Monday – an hour overgearing on the bike followed by a 40min pacing tempo run
Tuesday – a late night run in Exeter after I had driven down – 30mins at 147(ish)bpm
Wednesday – a core strength set (mainly squats/lunges and single leg squats) with a bit of rest

Yesterday was meant to be a hills interval set on the turbo to build some top end power for Wimbleball:

Warm Up:

15mins EASY spin – build cadence to 95RPM for the last 5minutes.
Include 8 x 30s ILT, straight through
Every 2nd minute focus on smoothing the pedal stroke – no dead spots.
Main Set:
5 x 4min @ 300w (115% FTP) – 75-80RPM
4mins v.veasy in b/t.
CD:
5mins easy (lower HR <100)

Promptly followed by a 28min fartlek run:
4 @70%
2 @80%
1 @85%
x 4
CD: 5min stretch
Which turned out to be a disaster – after driving back Cornwall (left at 8am – did a 1hr presentation in Exeter and then got back at 6pm) I tried to do the set – 1-3 went well then I failed the last one and only managed half the run…not good….

So I had to drag myself out of bed today – really tired…and the session in front of me was:

Swim – Speed Endurance 100s
WU:
400 easy f/c
Drills:
2 x 50 Fins (Kick only)
2 x 25 kick board
2 x 50 Best stroke count
2 x 25 kick board
2 x 50 Paddles
2 x 50 Fins (Full stroke)
Main Set:
2 x (10 x 100m) – (90% AT, medium discomfort)
Coold Down:
100 Easy – put stroke back together, finish with good form.

Started well – nice to be in the pool but felt a bit off going into the 100s. First set ranged from 1:20 to 1:24 and the second 1:22-1:25 so consistency was good but just slow – this combined with my disasterous set last night make me wonder if I either have a low grade bug or am just tired! (very long week at work and quite stressfull….)

At least I managed to get a slot at Marshman on the first week of may – eek only a little over a month to my first 70.3 of the year :-O

Oh well – 3hr ride and a negative split run tomorrow then a dinner party in the evening – four courses moving house between them – should be fun!
